Manic Street Preachers guitarist and lyricist Richey Edwards disappeared on the day he was due to fly to the US for a promotional tour. His car was found abandoned near the Severn Bridge. He was declared presumed dead in 2008.

On February 1, 1995, Richard James 'Richey' Edwards, the 27-year-old rhythm guitarist, lyricist, and cultural icon of the Welsh rock band Manic Street Preachers, checked out of the Embassy Hotel in London where he had been staying. He was due to fly to the United States that day with bandmate James Dean Bradfield for a promotional tour. Instead of going to the airport, Edwards withdrew £200 from his bank account and drove his silver Vauxhall Cavalier away. He was never seen again.

Over the following two weeks, Edwards' car was spotted by toll booth cameras crossing the Severn Bridge—which connects England and Wales—multiple times. On February 14, his car was found abandoned at the Aust motorway services, near the bridge. The Severn Estuary below the bridge is notorious for its strong currents and has been the site of numerous suicides. However, no body was ever recovered, and Edwards' passport was missing from his flat.

Edwards had a well-documented history of depression, self-harm, anorexia, and alcohol abuse. He had been hospitalized in a psychiatric facility in 1994 and was known to have struggled profoundly with mental health issues. These factors led many to conclude he had likely taken his own life. However, others—including his family—held out hope that he may have simply walked away from fame and started a new life, pointing to the missing passport and reported sightings in locations ranging from Goa to the Canary Islands.

Richey Edwards was officially declared 'presumed dead' by his family in November 2008. The Manic Street Preachers continued as a three-piece, and in 2009 released 'Journal for Plague Lovers,' an album set to lyrics Edwards had left behind. His disappearance remains one of the most poignant mysteries in British music history.
