Case background and investigation

Richard James Edwards, known as Richey, was the lyricist and rhythm guitarist of the Welsh rock band Manic Street Preachers. He was 27 when he went missing on February 1, 1995, the day he and singer James Dean Bradfield were due to fly to the United States for a promotional trip, according to NME.

Edwards had been staying at the Embassy Hotel in Bayswater, London, in room 561. A police statement quoted in an excerpt from the 2019 book Withdrawn Traces, published by Penguin, says he was seen leaving the hotel at 7 a.m. that morning. A January 2026 appeal by the charity Missing Persons Support and his sister notes that the precise time he left the hotel has never been settled.

His silver Vauxhall Cavalier was later found at the service station on the English side of the old Severn crossing, known as Aust or Severn View services. According to the Penguin excerpt and Wikipedia, the car was first noticed around February 14 and was reported abandoned on February 17, 1995. Because the services sit beside the Severn Bridge, it has been widely assumed that he may have taken his own life there, but no body has ever been recovered and there is no proof of how or whether he died. Unconfirmed sightings were reported in the years that followed, NME has noted.

Edwards had spoken publicly about depression, and he spent time in hospital in 1994, according to Wikipedia. In 2018 his family said they had learned that the time recorded on a Severn Bridge toll receipt linked to the case had been read on the wrong clock, placing the crossing in the early hours rather than the afternoon; NME reported his sister's view that this changed the accepted timeline.

His parents, who had earlier declined to do so, obtained a court order in 2008 that changed his legal status to presumed dead. NME reported on November 24, 2008 that the family's lawyer said the step was about settling his affairs and did not mean the family accepted he had died. The 2026 anniversary appeal asked anyone with information to contact the Metropolitan Police, and he remains missing.
