Four-year-old Michael Dunahee disappeared from a school playground in Victoria, British Columbia while his parents were nearby. The case became Canada's most widely publicized missing child case and changed how missing children investigations are handled nationwide.

On the morning of Sunday, March 24, 1991, four-year-old Michael Wayne Dunahee was playing on the playground at Blanshard Elementary School in Victoria, British Columbia while his parents, Crystal and Bruce Dunahee, were at a nearby football practice. At approximately 12:30 p.m., Crystal went to check on Michael and found the playground empty. He had vanished in what investigators estimate was a window of no more than a few minutes.

The disappearance triggered the largest search operation in British Columbia history. Over 1,500 volunteers joined police in combing Victoria and the surrounding area. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Victoria Police, and the FBI were all involved. More than 11,000 tips were received in the first year alone, and over 200 suspects were investigated.

Michael's case became the most publicized missing child case in Canadian history. His image was distributed on posters, billboards, and milk cartons across North America. Crystal and Bruce Dunahee became vocal advocates for missing children's rights and child safety. Their efforts led to significant changes in how police handle missing children reports in Canada, including the requirement for immediate investigation regardless of how long the child has been missing.

Despite decades of investigation, age-progression images, DNA database submissions, and periodic reinvestigations, Michael Dunahee has never been found. The Victoria Police Department maintains the investigation as an active file, and tips continue to come in. Michael would be in his late thirties if still alive.
