Cecilia Zhang
Nine-year-old Cecilia Zhang was kidnapped from her bedroom in Toronto. Her body was found five months later. Min Chen pleaded guilty to second-degree murder.
On October 19, 2003, nine-year-old Cecilia Zhang was kidnapped from her bedroom in her family's home in North York, a district of Toronto. Her parents discovered her missing in the morning when they found her bedroom window open and a cut screen. Cecilia's shoes and jacket were still in the house.
A massive search was launched, and the case received extensive media coverage. The Zhang family offered a reward and made emotional public appeals for their daughter's return. Police investigated hundreds of tips but initially made no arrests.
On March 30, 2004, five months after her abduction, Cecilia's body was found in a ravine near Mississauga. She had died from asphyxiation. DNA evidence and forensic analysis led investigators to Min Chen, a family acquaintance who had known the Zhangs through the Chinese-Canadian community.
Chen was arrested in 2004 and pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in 2006. He was sentenced to life in prison with no possibility of parole for 15 years. The case led to increased discussion about child safety and home security in Toronto.
