Thirteen-year-old Daniel Morcombe disappeared while waiting for a bus on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland. In 2011, Brett Peter Cowan was arrested and later convicted of his murder.

On December 7, 2003, thirteen-year-old Daniel James Morcombe was waiting at a bus stop beneath the Kiel Mountain Road overpass on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland, Australia. He was heading to a shopping centre to buy Christmas presents. When a bus passed without stopping due to running late, Daniel was left waiting for the next one. He was never seen again.

Daniel's disappearance sparked one of Queensland's largest missing person investigations. Despite extensive searches, public appeals, and the establishment of a dedicated task force, no trace of Daniel was found for years. His parents, Bruce and Denise Morcombe, became prominent advocates for child safety, founding the Daniel Morcombe Foundation.

In 2011, a covert police operation targeting convicted child sex offender Brett Peter Cowan led to a breakthrough. Undercover officers posing as members of a criminal organization befriended Cowan, who eventually confessed to abducting, sexually assaulting, and murdering Daniel. He led officers to Daniel's remains in bushland near the Glass House Mountains.

Cowan was arrested in August 2011 and stood trial in 2014. He was found guilty of murder, indecent treatment of a child, and interfering with a corpse, and was sentenced to life imprisonment with a non-parole period of 20 years. The case led to significant reforms in child protection legislation in Queensland.
