On November 8, 2010, Bich Ha Pan was shot and killed and her husband Huei Hann Pan was critically wounded during what appeared to be a home invasion robbery in their Markham, Ontario home. Their daughter Jennifer, 24, told police that intruders had entered and demanded money.

However, investigators noticed inconsistencies in Jennifer's account. Cell phone records and other evidence revealed that Jennifer had orchestrated the attack. She had hired hitmen through her boyfriend Daniel Wong to kill her parents.

Jennifer's motive stemmed from years of living a double life. She had lied to her strict immigrant parents about graduating high school, attending college, and having a career as a pharmacist. When her parents discovered the deception and tried to separate her from her boyfriend, she planned the murders.

Jennifer Pan, Daniel Wong, David Mylvaganam and Lenford Crawford were convicted of first-degree murder and attempted murder in December 2014 and sentenced to life with no parole eligibility for 25 years; a fifth accused, Eric Carty, was dealt with separately. In 2023 the Ontario Court of Appeal ordered a new trial on the murder counts, and the Supreme Court of Canada upheld that order in 2025.
