Claudia Lawrence
Chef Claudia Lawrence disappeared on her way to work at the University of York. Police believe she was murdered but her body has never been found. Several suspects were arrested over the years but none have been charged.
Claudia Elizabeth Lawrence, a 35-year-old chef at the University of York's Goodricke College, was last seen at approximately 3:05 p.m. on March 18, 2009, walking near her home in the Heworth area of York. She spoke to her mother on the phone that evening and sent a text message to a friend, but failed to arrive for her 6:00 a.m. shift at the university the next morning. Her colleagues raised the alarm when she did not appear for work.
Police initially treated the case as a missing person inquiry but reclassified it as a murder investigation in April 2009 after finding evidence in her home suggesting she had not left voluntarily. Her rucksack, mobile phone, and keys were missing, but other personal items she would normally take to work were left behind. CCTV showed a man walking past her house around the time she would have been leaving for work, but he was never identified.
The investigation revealed that Claudia led a complicated private life with multiple simultaneous relationships, some with married men. Police focused on several male acquaintances but struggled to build a case. In 2014 and 2015, four men were arrested on suspicion of murder but all were released without charge due to insufficient evidence. North Yorkshire Police conducted extensive searches of areas around York but never found a body.
Claudia's father Peter Lawrence campaigned tirelessly for changes to the law regarding missing persons, leading to 'Claudia's Law'—the Guardianship (Missing Persons) Act 2017—which allows families to manage the financial affairs of missing loved ones. Peter Lawrence died in February 2021 without ever learning what happened to his daughter. The case remains open but no active suspects have been identified.
