Case background and investigation

Jill Dando was one of the BBC's best-known presenters and had co-hosted the programme Crimewatch since 1995. At about 11:32 on the morning of April 26, 1999, she was shot once in the head at close range on the doorstep of her house in Gowan Avenue, Fulham, in west London. She was 37. According to LBC, she was pronounced dead at Charing Cross Hospital at 1:03 pm.

A neighbour heard her scream but did not hear a shot, and saw a white man of about six feet, aged around 40, walking away from the house, according to a timeline published by Yahoo News UK. The Metropolitan Police inquiry, Operation Oxborough, interviewed around 2,500 people. Wikipedia's account says the weapon was a 9mm Short calibre pistol and that no gun was recovered.

On May 25, 2000, police arrested Barry George, who lived nearby. He was charged with murder and tried at the Old Bailey, where a jury convicted him on July 2, 2001, by a majority of ten to one. The prosecution case included a single particle of firearm discharge residue found in a coat pocket. His defence suggested that the killing could have been connected to Dando's appearance in an appeal for Kosovan refugees. A first appeal was dismissed in 2002.

After a referral by the Criminal Cases Review Commission, the Court of Appeal quashed the conviction on November 15, 2007, finding it unsafe because of the way the residue evidence had been presented. George was tried again and was found not guilty on August 1, 2008, having spent about eight years in prison. He is legally innocent of the murder. In January 2013 the High Court rejected his claim for compensation, RTE reported, and he separately received damages from newspaper publishers over their coverage of him.

No one else has been charged. Theories discussed publicly over the years include a contract killing and a link to Serbia, but none has been established in court. The case was revisited in a 2023 Netflix documentary series, and Yahoo News UK reported that lawyers had urged police to examine a possible link to a man convicted in Serbia.

In September 2026, LBC reported that Metropolitan Police detectives would re-examine CCTV footage from Putney Bridge station showing an unidentified man, recorded roughly 20 minutes after the shooting about a mile away, using newer enhancement technology. The force said this was part of continuing inquiries and should not be read as a significant line of inquiry or as a new investigation.
