Peter Sutcliffe, known as the Yorkshire Ripper, murdered 13 women and attempted to murder seven others across northern England between 1975 and 1980. His victims included sex workers and women walking alone at night.
Sutcliffe was caught in January 1981 when police found him with a sex worker in Sheffield. He was convicted of 13 murders and sentenced to 20 concurrent life sentences. He was given a whole-life tariff in 2010.
The investigation was one of the largest and most criticized in British police history. Mistakes included ignoring a key tip and being misled by hoax letters and tape recordings from 'Wearside Jack.'
Sutcliffe died on November 13, 2020 at HMP Frankland, Durham, from COVID-19. He had tested positive and refused treatment. His death came 39 years into his imprisonment.
