Lucy Letby Victims
Neonatal nurse Lucy Letby was convicted of murdering seven babies and attempting to murder six others at the Countess of Chester Hospital. She received a whole-life order.
Lucy Letby, a neonatal nurse at the Countess of Chester Hospital, was convicted in August 2023 of murdering seven babies and attempting to murder six others between June 2015 and June 2016.
Letby killed babies through methods including injecting air into their bloodstreams, poisoning them with insulin, overfeeding them with milk, and causing trauma. She targeted the most vulnerable premature infants.
Senior doctors had raised concerns about Letby in 2016 when they noticed a correlation between her shifts and unexplained baby deaths. Hospital management initially failed to act and ordered the doctors to apologize to Letby.
Letby was sentenced to a whole-life order—meaning she will never be released. The case led to a public inquiry (the Thirlwall Inquiry) into the hospital's failures. She was convicted of a further attempted murder at a retrial in 2024.
