Experienced cave diver Ben McDaniel entered Vortex Spring, a popular underwater cave system in Florida, and never surfaced. Despite extensive searches of the cave system, his body was never found, leading to theories that he faked his death or exited the cave unseen.

On the evening of August 18, 2010, Ben McDaniel, a 30-year-old scuba diver from Memphis, Tennessee, entered the underwater cave system at Vortex Spring, a popular diving site near Marianna in Florida's panhandle. Staff at the dive shop saw him enter the water around 7:30 p.m., and security cameras captured him going in. He was seen by other divers in the cave earlier that evening. He never surfaced.

The cave system at Vortex Spring extends deep into the Florida aquifer and features increasingly narrow passages beyond a locked gate installed at the 115-foot depth to prevent untrained divers from entering the most dangerous sections. McDaniel, who held only a basic open-water certification but had been diving at Vortex Spring frequently, had reportedly been seen beyond the gate on previous occasions, having apparently obtained a key or found a way past it.

Multiple professional cave diving teams searched the system extensively in the weeks following McDaniel's disappearance. Expert divers Edd Sorenson—one of the world's foremost cave rescue divers—and others penetrated the deepest and narrowest passages without finding any trace of McDaniel or his equipment. The fact that his body was never found in a finite, enclosed cave system has puzzled investigators and the diving community.

Theories diverge sharply. Some believe McDaniel's body became wedged in an unexplored crevice or silt-covered passage too narrow or dangerous for rescuers to reach. Others believe he may have faked his death to escape financial difficulties—he was reportedly facing significant debt and personal problems. His parents hired private investigators and offered rewards, but no conclusive evidence has emerged to support either theory.
