Two-year-old Caylee Anthony disappeared in June 2008. Her mother Casey Anthony waited 31 days before reporting her missing. Caylee's skeletal remains were found near the family home in December 2008. Casey Anthony was acquitted of murder in 2011, making the case one of the most controversial verdicts in recent American legal history.

Caylee Marie Anthony was a two-year-old girl from Orlando, Florida, who was last seen alive on June 16, 2008. She was not reported missing for roughly a month. On July 15, 2008, her grandmother, Cindy Anthony, placed a 911 call stating that she had not seen the child for 31 days and that Caylee's mother, Casey Anthony, had given inconsistent explanations for the girl's whereabouts. Casey Anthony initially told investigators that a babysitter had taken Caylee, an account police were unable to verify. The delayed report and shifting statements drew intense national and international media attention to the case.

Casey Anthony was arrested on July 16, 2008, initially on charges related to child neglect and providing false statements to law enforcement. As the investigation continued, prosecutors escalated the case, and in October 2008 a grand jury indicted her on charges including first-degree murder, aggravated child abuse, and aggravated manslaughter of a child. She pleaded not guilty. During this period the whereabouts of Caylee remained unknown, and the search for the child continued for months.

On December 11, 2008, a utility worker discovered skeletal remains inside a bag in a wooded area near the Anthony family home. On December 19, 2008, authorities confirmed that the remains were Caylee's. The Orange County medical examiner, Dr. Jan Garavaglia, ruled the death a homicide but stated that the cause of death was undetermined, describing it as a homicide by undetermined means. Because of the condition of the remains, investigators were unable to establish a precise mechanism or manner in which the child died.

Casey Anthony's trial began in the spring of 2011, with opening statements delivered on May 24, 2011. Prosecutors argued that she had killed her daughter, while defense attorney Jose Baez contended that Caylee had drowned accidentally in the family swimming pool and that the death had been concealed — allegations that family members denied. On July 5, 2011, after deliberating less than 11 hours, the jury acquitted Casey Anthony of first-degree murder, aggravated child abuse, and aggravated manslaughter of a child. She was found guilty only of four misdemeanor counts of providing false information to law enforcement. On July 7, 2011, she was sentenced to four years with credit for time served and was released within days.

In 2013, a Florida appellate court overturned two of the four false-information convictions on double jeopardy grounds, concluding that her statements could constitute only two offenses rather than four. Casey Anthony was legally acquitted of responsibility for her daughter's death, and the verdict cannot be revisited under double jeopardy protections. No one has been held criminally responsible for Caylee Anthony's death, and the manner in which she died remains officially undetermined. The case has since been the subject of extensive media coverage, books, and documentaries, but it has produced no further criminal charges.
