Sherin Mathews
Three-year-old adopted Indian girl Sherin Mathews was reported missing in Richardson, Texas. Her adoptive father Wesley Mathews later admitted to killing her. He was sentenced to life.
On October 7, 2017, Wesley Mathews reported his three-year-old adopted daughter Sherin missing from their home in Richardson, Texas. He initially claimed he had sent her outside at 3 a.m. as punishment for not drinking her milk, and that she had disappeared.
Sherin had been adopted from India in 2016. She had developmental disabilities and was small for her age. The circumstances of the report immediately raised suspicions.
Sherin's body was found in a culvert near the family home on October 22. Wesley Mathews eventually changed his story, admitting that he had force-fed Sherin milk and she had choked and died. He said he disposed of her body in a panic.
Wesley Mathews was convicted of injury to a child and sentenced to life in prison. His wife Sini Mathews was initially charged with child abandonment but the charges were dropped. The case raised questions about the oversight of international adoptions and the treatment of adopted children with disabilities.
