Terri 'Missy' Bevers
Fitness instructor Missy Bevers was found dead in a church where she was preparing for an early morning boot camp class. Surveillance footage showed a suspect in SWAT-style tactical gear walking through the church before the murder. The suspect's identity remains unknown despite the footage being widely circulated nationally.
Terri Leann 'Missy' Bevers was a 45-year-old fitness instructor, wife, and mother of three from Midlothian, Texas, who taught early-morning Camp Gladiator boot-camp classes. On the evening of April 17, 2016, with severe thunderstorms forecast, she told her students that the next morning's session would be held indoors at Creekside Church of Christ in Midlothian rather than outside.
In the pre-dawn hours of April 18, 2016, Bevers arrived at the church to set up for the class. Surveillance video timestamps show her entering at about 4:18 a.m. and beginning to carry exercise equipment inside. Shortly after 5:00 a.m., a student who came for the workout discovered her body inside the building. Bevers had died from multiple puncture wounds to her head and chest; a hammer and other tools were reported near the scene.
The case drew international attention because of the church's own security footage, which police later released publicly. The video captured an unidentified figure dressed head to toe in what appeared to be police-style tactical or 'SWAT' gear, including a vest marked 'POLICE,' a helmet, and gloves. For roughly 20 to 30 minutes before Bevers arrived, the figure walked slowly through the church hallways, breaking glass and prying open doors with a tool. The person's deliberate, awkward movements and distinctive gait became a focal point of public speculation.
Investigators initially treated the killing as a possible burglary but found that Bevers' purse, iPad, and other valuables were left behind, leading them to conclude the scene may have been staged and that she may have been specifically targeted. Police consulted an FBI-affiliated forensic podiatrist, Dr. Michael Nirenberg, who studied the suspect's 'out-toed' walking gait; analysts estimated the figure stood roughly 5-foot-8. Authorities first described the suspect as likely male but later said the person's sex could not be determined with certainty.
Detectives pursued numerous leads. They examined a Nissan Altima seen circling near the church around 2 a.m. that morning, though the driver was never identified or definitively linked to the crime. Family members, including Bevers' husband Brandon Bevers and his father, were looked at and reported alibis placing them out of state; police have publicly said no one has been ruled out. Bevers had also reported receiving unsettling online messages before her death, and investigators followed digital and tip-based leads.
No one has ever been arrested or charged. The Midlothian Police Department, working with the Texas Department of Public Safety, Texas Rangers, the Ellis County District Attorney's Office, and federal agencies, says the homicide remains an active investigation. As of the April 2026 ten-year anniversary, the department reported having received more than 3,000 tips over the years, said it continues to apply new forensic technology, and reiterated that no potential suspect has been eliminated. Friends and advocates have held awareness events and produced podcasts to keep the unsolved case in the public eye. All individuals discussed publicly in connection with the case remain uncharged, and none has been accused of wrongdoing.
