Vanessa Guillen
Army specialist Vanessa Guillen was bludgeoned to death by fellow soldier Aaron Robinson at Fort Hood. The case exposed systemic failures in military sexual harassment reporting.
On April 22, 2020, twenty-year-old Army Specialist Vanessa Guillen disappeared from Fort Hood in Killeen, Texas, one of the largest military installations in the United States. Her family reported that she had told them she was being sexually harassed by a superior but was afraid to report it through official channels.
After a two-month search, Guillen's dismembered remains were found on June 30 near the Leon River, about 20 miles from Fort Hood. Evidence pointed to Specialist Aaron David Robinson, who had bludgeoned Guillen with a hammer in an armory room and then enlisted his girlfriend Cecily Aguilar to help dismember and dispose of the body.
When investigators attempted to arrest Robinson on July 1, he fled the post and fatally shot himself. Aguilar was arrested and eventually pleaded guilty to accessory after the fact and three counts of tampering with evidence. She was sentenced to 30 years in prison.
The case sparked a national reckoning about sexual harassment and assault in the U.S. military. The 'I Am Vanessa Guillen Act,' signed into law in 2021, reformed how the military handles sexual harassment complaints by removing the chain of command from the reporting process.
