Ahmaud Arbery
Ahmaud Arbery was chased and shot dead while jogging in Brunswick, Georgia by three white men who claimed they suspected him of burglary. All three were convicted of murder after video went viral.
On February 23, 2020, Ahmaud Arbery, a 25-year-old Black man, was jogging through the Satilla Shores neighborhood of Brunswick, Georgia when he was chased by three white men in pickup trucks. Gregory McMichael, his son Travis McMichael, and neighbor William 'Roddie' Bryan cornered Arbery and Travis shot him three times.
The three men claimed they suspected Arbery of burglary and were attempting a 'citizen's arrest.' Local prosecutors initially declined to bring charges, with two prosecutors later indicted for their handling of the case.
In May 2020, cell phone video of the shooting recorded by Bryan was leaked online, sparking national outrage. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation took over the case and all three men were arrested.
All three were convicted of murder in November 2021 and sentenced to life in prison—the McMichaels without parole. They were also convicted of federal hate crimes in February 2022. The case led Georgia to pass its first hate crime law and reform its citizen's arrest statute.
