Twenty-two-year-old UGA nursing student Laken Riley was murdered while jogging on campus. Jose Ibarra, a Venezuelan national in the U.S. illegally, was convicted. The case became politically charged.
On February 22, 2024, Laken Riley, a 22-year-old Augusta University nursing student, went jogging near the University of Georgia campus in Athens, Georgia. She was attacked and killed.
Jose Antonio Ibarra, 26, a Venezuelan national who had entered the U.S. illegally in 2022, was arrested the following day. Phone data and surveillance footage placed him at the scene.
Ibarra was convicted of malice murder, felony murder, kidnapping, aggravated assault, and other charges in November 2024. He was sentenced to life without the possibility of parole.
The case became a flashpoint in the national immigration debate. The 'Laken Riley Act,' requiring ICE detention of undocumented immigrants charged with certain crimes, was signed into law in 2025.
