On August 5, 2023, Rachel Morin, a 37-year-old mother of five, went for a hike on the Ma & Pa Heritage Trail near Bel Air, Maryland. She never returned home. Her body was found the next day.
An extensive investigation using DNA evidence and surveillance footage led to the identification of Victor Antonio Martinez-Hernandez, a citizen of El Salvador who had entered the U.S. illegally.
Martinez-Hernandez was arrested in Tulsa, Oklahoma in June 2024. He was linked to additional violent crimes including a murder in El Salvador and an assault in Los Angeles.
The case, along with the Laken Riley case, became part of the national debate about border security and immigration enforcement during the 2024 election cycle.
