On February 19, 2020, rapper Pop Smoke (Bashar Barakah Jackson), 20, was shot and killed during a home invasion at a rented home in the Hollywood Hills. Four masked individuals broke in around 4:30 a.m.
Pop Smoke had inadvertently revealed the address of the rental house by posting a photo of a gift bag on Instagram with the address visible.
Five teenagers were charged with the murder. The primary shooter was 15 at the time. The group had targeted Pop Smoke for robbery.
In 2024, the defendants received sentences ranging from probation to 18 years. The light sentences drew criticism from Pop Smoke's family and fans.
