On May 24, 2012, Luka Magnotta murdered Jun Lin, a 33-year-old Chinese international student, in his Montreal apartment. Magnotta filmed the murder, dismemberment, and acts of necrophilia, then posted the video online.
Magnotta mailed body parts to the offices of political parties and elementary schools in Ottawa and Vancouver. A torso was found in a suitcase behind Magnotta's apartment building.
Magnotta fled to France and then Germany, where he was arrested at an internet café in Berlin on June 4, 2012, while reading news articles about himself.
Magnotta was convicted of first-degree murder in 2014 and sentenced to life with no parole eligibility for 25 years. The case was the subject of the Netflix documentary 'Don't F**k with Cats,' which traced how internet sleuths identified Magnotta before the murder through animal cruelty videos.
