On May 30, 2012, nineteen-year-old Brittney Wood disappeared in Mobile, Alabama, after leaving her mother's home to meet her uncle, Donnie Holland. Holland was found dead the same day from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The investigation into Brittney's disappearance uncovered a massive child sexual abuse ring within her own extended family. Multiple family members were charged with sexual abuse of children within the family, including abuse of Brittney from a young age.
Investigators believe that Brittney may have been killed because she was prepared to testify against family members in the abuse cases. Donnie Holland is the primary suspect in her disappearance, but his death prevented any confession or prosecution.
Despite extensive searches, including draining ponds and searching wooded areas, Brittney Wood has never been found. More than a dozen of her family members have been convicted of sexual abuse charges.
