Three young women were strangled after leaving the Barrowland Ballroom in Glasgow between 1968 and 1969. The suspect, nicknamed 'Bible John' for quoting scripture, was never identified despite being Scotland's most famous serial murder case.

Between February 1968 and October 1969, three young women were murdered in Glasgow, Scotland after attending Thursday night dances at the Barrowland Ballroom on Gallowgate. Patricia Docker (25) was found strangled on February 23, 1968. Jemima McDonald (32) was found in a derelict building on August 16, 1969. Helen Puttock (29) was found strangled in her own backyard on October 31, 1969. All three women were menstruating at the time of their deaths, a detail that would prove significant.

The crucial witness was Jean Williams, Helen Puttock's sister, who had shared a taxi with Helen and the suspect after the dance on the night Helen was killed. Jean described a tall, slim, well-dressed man with reddish-brown hair who quoted extensively from the Bible and expressed strong views about adultery and promiscuity. He gave his name as 'John.' This description earned him the nickname 'Bible John' in the press.

The Glasgow police investigation was one of the largest in Scottish history. Over 50,000 statements were taken, thousands of men were interviewed, and Jean Williams worked with police on numerous identification attempts. A detailed composite sketch was circulated widely. Despite the extensive effort, Bible John was never identified.

In the 1990s and 2000s, police reinvestigated using DNA technology and briefly focused on John Irvine McInnes, a distant relative of one of the victims who had committed suicide in 1980. His body was exhumed in 1996 for DNA comparison, but the results were inconclusive. The investigation was scaled back but has never been officially closed. Bible John remains Scotland's most notorious unidentified serial killer.
