Mr. Cruel Victims
Between 1987 and 1991, an unidentified predator kidnapped and sexually assaulted at least three girls and likely murdered a fourth in suburban Melbourne. Known as 'Mr. Cruel' for his methodical approach, he was never caught despite being one of Australia's most wanted criminals.
Between August 1987 and April 1991, an unidentified masked man broke into homes in the suburbs of Melbourne, Australia, kidnapping young girls in a series of highly planned attacks. The offender, dubbed 'Mr. Cruel' by police and media, displayed an extreme level of planning and forensic awareness that was unusual for the era. In each attack, he restrained the other family members, disabled phone lines, and took the child away for extended periods before returning her—except in one case.
The known attacks attributed to Mr. Cruel include the abduction of Sharon Wills (10) from her Lower Plenty home in August 1987, who was held for 18 hours and released near a school; the kidnapping of Nicola Lynas (13) from her Canterbury home in July 1990, who was held for 50 hours; and the abduction of Karmein Chan (13) from her Templestowe home in April 1991. Karmein was never returned. Her remains were found a year later in Thomastown, killed by three gunshots to the head.
Mr. Cruel took extraordinary precautions: he wore a balaclava, used masking tape on victims' eyes, bathed the girls before returning them to remove forensic evidence, and washed their clothing. He appeared to have conducted extensive surveillance of the homes before the attacks. Despite being described by surviving victims—average height, local accent, distinctive body odor—and a massive police investigation involving over 30,000 suspects, he was never identified.
The case prompted one of Victoria Police's largest investigations. In 2016, police renewed their appeal for information, and the case has been periodically linked to other unsolved crimes in Melbourne. Mr. Cruel's identity remains one of Australia's most enduring criminal mysteries. Investigators believe he is likely still alive and may have been a local resident of Melbourne's eastern suburbs.
