Twenty-year-old nursing student Holly Bobo was abducted near her home in Darden, Tennessee. Her remains were found four years later. Zach Adams was convicted of her murder in 2017 and sentenced to three life terms. Two others were also convicted for their roles in her death.

On the morning of April 13, 2011, 20-year-old nursing student Holly Lynn Bobo disappeared from her family's rural home in Darden, in Decatur County, Tennessee. Her brother, Clint Bobo, told investigators he saw a man in camouflage clothing walking his sister toward the woods behind the house at around 7:42 a.m.; he initially assumed the man was Holly's boyfriend. A neighbor reported hearing a scream, and bloodstains were later found in the family's carport. Holly's disappearance triggered one of the largest and longest search efforts in Tennessee history, drawing hundreds of volunteers, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI), and the FBI. Despite extensive searches, she remained missing for more than three years.

The case broke open on September 7, 2014, when two men searching for wild ginseng discovered human skeletal remains in a wooded area of northern Decatur County, roughly 20 miles from the Bobo home. On September 8, 2014, the TBI announced that forensic analysis had confirmed the partial remains—including the skull—were those of Holly Bobo. An autopsy determined she had died from a gunshot wound to the head, and her death was ruled a homicide.

The investigation ultimately implicated several local men. Zachary Rye Adams was indicted in March 2014 on first-degree murder and especially aggravated kidnapping charges; a rape charge was later added. His brother, John Dylan Adams, and Jason Autry were also charged in connection with the case. A fourth man, Shayne Austin, was granted limited immunity early in the investigation; that immunity was later revoked, and Austin died by suicide in February 2015. The prosecution faced repeated criticism over discovery delays and disputes that briefly led the TBI to withdraw from the case before a special prosecutor was appointed.

Zachary Adams was tried in Savannah, Tennessee, after a change of venue. On September 22, 2017, following an 11-day trial, a jury found him guilty on all counts, including felony first-degree murder, especially aggravated kidnapping, and aggravated rape. The state's case relied heavily on the testimony of Jason Autry, who told jurors he had helped move Bobo's body. On September 23, 2017, Adams was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole plus 50 years; under an agreement between prosecutors and the defense, he was spared a possible death sentence. Adams has continued to maintain his innocence.

The related defendants resolved their cases separately, according to court records and news reporting. In January 2018, John Dylan Adams entered an Alford plea—accepting conviction without admitting guilt—to facilitation of first-degree murder and especially aggravated kidnapping, and was sentenced to 35 years. Jason Autry, who testified against Zachary Adams as a cooperating witness, received a reduced sentence and was released around 2020. In later years, Adams pursued post-conviction relief; reporting indicates Autry recanted portions of his trial testimony in a 2024 filing, and Adams sought a new trial. As of 2025, Zachary Adams's conviction stood, having been affirmed on appeal, while post-conviction proceedings continued.
