Harmony Montgomery
Five-year-old Harmony Montgomery was murdered by her father Adam Montgomery in Manchester, New Hampshire. She wasn't reported missing until 2021 due to systemic failures.
Harmony Montgomery was a five-year-old girl in Manchester, New Hampshire who was last seen alive on December 7, 2019. Her disappearance was not reported to police until December 2021—a full two years later—when the state's Division for Children, Youth and Families realized no one could account for the child.
The investigation revealed catastrophic failures in the child welfare system. Harmony had been in foster care in Massachusetts before being placed with her biological father, Adam Montgomery, in New Hampshire. Multiple agencies lost track of her.
Adam Montgomery was arrested in January 2022 on charges of assault and welfare fraud. As the investigation continued, Harmony's remains were eventually located. Adam was charged with second-degree murder.
Montgomery was convicted of second-degree murder in 2024 and sentenced to 45 years to life. The case prompted major reforms in both New Hampshire and Massachusetts child welfare systems.
