In September 2019, sixteen-year-old Tylee Ryan and seven-year-old Joshua 'JJ' Vallow disappeared from Rexburg, Idaho. Their mother, Lori Vallow, and her new husband, Chad Daybell, told conflicting stories about the children's whereabouts.
Extended family members raised the alarm when they could not contact the children. When police conducted a welfare check in November 2019, Lori and Chad had fled Idaho. They were eventually located in Hawaii in January 2020.
On June 9, 2020, investigators found the children's remains on Chad Daybell's property. Tylee's remains had been burned, and JJ's body was wrapped in plastic and duct tape. The case revealed a web of deaths connected to the couple, including Lori's previous husband Charles Vallow and Chad's previous wife Tammy Daybell.
Both were convicted of multiple counts of murder. Chad Daybell was sentenced to death, and Lori Vallow Daybell was sentenced to life without parole. The case involved extreme religious beliefs, with the couple allegedly believing certain people were 'dark' spirits who needed to be eliminated.
