Eleven-year-old Rui Pedro Teixeira Mendonça disappeared from Lousada, Portugal on March 4, 1998. Afonso Dias, acquitted at a first trial in 2012, was later convicted of kidnapping and sentenced to three years in prison; he was released in 2017. Rui Pedro has never been found and was declared legally dead in 2019.

Case background and investigation
On March 4, 1998, eleven-year-old Rui Pedro Teixeira Mendonça disappeared from the town of Lousada in northern Portugal. The boy had been last seen in the company of a known local man, Afonso Dias, who was later convicted of kidnapping.
The investigation revealed deeply disturbing connections to a pedophilia network. A photograph allegedly showing Rui Pedro was found during an Interpol operation targeting child exploitation websites, but the identification was never conclusively confirmed.
Afonso Dias was acquitted at his first trial in 2012 but was subsequently convicted of kidnapping Rui Pedro and sentenced to three years in prison; he was released in March 2017 and never revealed the boy's whereabouts. The case became a national sensation in Portugal and exposed failures in the child protection system.
The case of Rui Pedro remains one of Portugal's most painful unsolved mysteries. It contributed to significant reforms in how Portugal handles missing children cases and child protection legislation.
