The investigation revealed deeply disturbing connections to a pedophilia network. A photograph allegedly showing Rui Pedro was found during an Interpol operation targeting child exploitation websites, but the identification was never conclusively confirmed.

Afonso Dias was convicted of kidnapping Rui Pedro and sentenced to 16 years in prison, but he never revealed the boy's whereabouts. The case became a national sensation in Portugal and exposed failures in the child protection system.
