Joran van der Sloot was extradited from Peru and pleaded guilty to extorting Natalee Holloway's family. He admitted for the first time that he killed Natalee in Aruba in 2005.

In October 2023, Joran van der Sloot was temporarily extradited from Peru, where he was serving a 28-year sentence for murdering Stephany Flores, to face charges in the United States.

Van der Sloot pleaded guilty to extortion and wire fraud for taking $25,000 from Natalee Holloway's mother Beth in 2010 in exchange for information about Natalee's remains—information that turned out to be false.

During the plea hearing, van der Sloot admitted for the first time that he killed Natalee Holloway on a beach in Aruba on May 30, 2005, and disposed of her body in the ocean.

He was sentenced to 20 years in U.S. federal prison, to be served after his Peruvian sentence. Beth Holloway finally received the closure she had sought for 18 years.
