Case background and investigation
Macin Smith was 17 and a senior at Desert Hills High School when he disappeared from St. George, Utah, on September 1, 2015. According to the Polly Klaas Foundation listing, he was born on April 7, 1998, and was 6 feet 4 inches tall and about 200 pounds, with blond hair and blue eyes. The Deseret News reported that the family had moved to St. George from Canada in April 2015.
According to St. George News, Macin left home that Tuesday morning, presumably for school, but did not attend any of his classes. The Deseret News and KSL reported that his father told police he had taken away Macin's cellphone and laptop the night before as a consequence for staying up late. Wikipedia's summary of contemporary coverage says his parents heard him moving around the house that morning and reported him missing that evening; that detail rests on Wikipedia alone.
Macin's wallet was also left behind. The Deseret News reported that a three-page handwritten note was later found inside it, and described it as a suicide note. Wikipedia dates the discovery to September 7, 2015. More than 200 volunteers searched the area around the family home, according to Wikipedia, and the Polly Klaas Foundation listing states that he may be in the local area or may have travelled to Las Vegas, Nevada.
In May 2019, KSL and the Deseret News reported on search warrant affidavits filed by St. George police. According to those reports, the warrants said detectives were investigating possible criminal homicide, referred to discrepancies in statements made by Macin's parents, and showed that a GPS tracker had been authorised for his father's truck in 2017. A police spokeswoman told the Deseret News that no one in the investigation was considered a suspect. Both parents told reporters they had nothing to hide and welcomed the scrutiny. No one has been charged.
Reported sightings in Utah and California in 2016 and 2017 were never confirmed, according to Wikipedia. His case was featured on the Investigation Discovery series Disappeared in 2017.
In September 2026, St. George News marked the eleventh anniversary of the disappearance. A family friend who runs the Macin's Army Facebook page told the outlet there had not been a single credible or confirmed lead or sighting in eleven years. Age-progressed images showing how he might look at 28 have been circulated. St. George police told the outlet that the case remains open and active and asked anyone with information to call the department at 435-627-4300.
