On September 1, 2015, seventeen-year-old Macin Smith left his family's home in St. George, Utah, on what was supposed to be his first day of school at Desert Hills High School. He never arrived at school.
Surveillance cameras captured Macin walking along Bluff Street in St. George and eventually heading into the desert toward the Red Cliffs area. His cell phone was later found at a construction site. Despite extensive ground searches and aerial sweeps of the surrounding desert terrain, no trace of Macin was found.
The investigation revealed that Macin had been dealing with the effects of his parents' divorce and a recent move. His family has said he showed no signs of suicidal ideation.
Macin's family has maintained an active search, including hiring private investigators and organizing volunteer search parties in the rugged red rock terrain around St. George.
