Case background and investigation

Katelyn Markham was 21 and a few weeks from completing a graphic arts degree at the Art Institute of Ohio in Cincinnati when she disappeared from her home in Fairfield, Ohio, in August 2011, according to CBS News. She had been engaged for about a year to John Carter, and the couple planned to move to Colorado, NBC News reported. WCPO noted that she was days away from her 22nd birthday.

She was last seen on August 13, 2011. According to NBC News, Carter called 911 on the night of August 14 to report her missing. He told Fairfield police he had been with her that evening, left for a friend's gathering, and later went to his mother's home. In the years that followed he took part in searches and gave media interviews asking for her return.

On April 7, 2013, skeletal remains identified as Markham's were found in a wooded dump site in Cedar Grove, Indiana, roughly 20 to 30 miles from her home. Authorities ruled the death a homicide but could not determine the cause, CBS News and NBC News reported.

The case was re-examined by investigators working for Butler County Prosecutor Michael Gmoser. A grand jury indicted Carter on two counts of murder in March 2023, and he pleaded not guilty. NBC News reported that the evidence was circumstantial, including witness accounts and writings found in a search of his home, and that Gmoser acknowledged there was no forensic or eyewitness evidence directly linking Carter to the death.

Shortly before trial, Carter pleaded guilty on June 7, 2024, to involuntary manslaughter under a plea agreement, and the murder charges were dropped. On July 18, 2024, Judge Daniel Haughey imposed three years in prison, the maximum for the offense. Gmoser told NBC that the statute of limitations had expired on other possible charges. Prosecutors said Carter had not explained how or why Markham died.

Carter sought early release in October 2025. Judge Haughey denied the motion on January 9, 2026, according to WVXU and WCPO. WCPO reported that after the hearing his attorney said Carter, despite the plea, maintains he did not cause her death; Gmoser described the court case as over. In June 2026 the Ohio House passed 'Katelyn's Law', a bill that would remove the statute of limitations for crimes connected to a murder, FOX19 reported; it then went to the Ohio Senate.
