Case background and investigation

Katelin Akens was 19 when she disappeared on December 5, 2015. She had grown up in Spotsylvania County, Virginia, was living in Arizona and had been visiting family, according to NBC Washington. She was due to fly home from Reagan National Airport that day.

According to WTOP and the Fredericksburg Free Press, her mother dropped her off at the home of her former stepfather, James Branton, in Partlow, in Spotsylvania County, because he had agreed to give her a ride. The plan was for him to take her to the Springfield mall in northern Virginia, where she would catch a Metro train to the airport. The Spotsylvania County Sheriff's Office said her plane ticket was never used. Two days later her suitcase was found along River Road in Spotsylvania County with most of its contents missing. NBC Washington reported that Branton told investigators he had dropped her off at the mall, but that no evidence confirming this was found.

The case remained a missing-person investigation for more than ten years. On April 10, 2026, Spotsylvania detectives and Virginia State Police arrested Branton on charges including aggravated sexual battery, custodial indecent liberties and child cruelty. WTOP reported that the charges concern alleged abuse of Akens and her younger sister between 2006 and 2011, when the girls and their mother lived with him. The sheriff's office named Akens as one of the alleged victims. Branton pleaded not guilty and was denied bond.

Branton has not been charged in connection with the disappearance. At the April bond hearing, Commonwealth's Attorney Ryan Mehaffey told the court that newly obtained evidence showed a potential motive to kill Akens; WTOP noted it was the first time prosecutors had said in court that they believe she is dead, and that investigators had not disclosed evidence of her death. Defense attorney John Spencer said his client had cooperated, had been cleared by Child Protective Services years earlier, and that the allegation was a stretch. Lt. Col. Delbert Myrick of the sheriff's office told the Free Press that Branton was the primary suspect, though possibly not the only one.

Investigators from the sheriff's office, state police, the FBI and the Virginia Department of Emergency Management searched three properties linked to Branton in April 2026 using excavators and ground-penetrating radar. Akens was not found, the Free Press reported.

In September 2026, WTOP reported that a Spotsylvania County grand jury had indicted Branton on 13 additional counts of possession of child sexual abuse material, and that his trial on the abuse charges, earlier set for July and then September, was expected to move to December. The sheriff's office says the investigation into the disappearance remains open and active.
