Gilgo Beach (Rex Heuermann)
Rex Heuermann, an NYC architect, was arrested and charged as the Gilgo Beach serial killer. DNA and phone data linked him to the murders of at least four women whose remains were found on Long Island.
On July 13, 2023, Rex Heuermann, 59, a New York City architect living in Massapequa Park, Long Island, was arrested and charged with three murders linked to the Gilgo Beach serial killings.
Between 2007 and 2011, the remains of 10 people were discovered along Ocean Parkway near Gilgo Beach on Long Island's South Shore. The case went unsolved for over a decade.
Heuermann was identified through a combination of cell phone data, burner phone records, and DNA evidence—specifically, genetic material linked to him through a family member.
He was initially charged with killing three of the 'Gilgo Four'—Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, and Amber Costello. A fourth count for Maureen Brainard-Barnes was later added. Investigation into additional victims continues.
