Abby Williams & Libby German

On February 13, 2017, 13-year-old Abigail 'Abby' Williams and 14-year-old Liberty 'Libby' German were dropped off at the Monon High Bridge Trail near Delphi, Indiana for a hiking trip. When they did not appear at a designated pickup point, their families reported them missing. Their bodies were found the next day in a wooded area near the trail.

Libby German had captured crucial evidence on her smartphone: a photo and a short video of a man walking on the Monon High Bridge behind them, along with a brief audio recording in which the man says 'Down the hill.' Indiana State Police released these recordings to the public, asking for help identifying the suspect. The case generated enormous public interest and thousands of tips.

Despite the unprecedented evidence captured by Libby, the case went unsolved for more than five years. Two different composite sketches of the suspect were released, creating some public confusion. Investigators reportedly struggled to match the grainy images and brief audio to any known individual.

In October 2022, Richard Matthew Allen, a 50-year-old pharmacy technician who lived in Delphi, was arrested and charged with the murders. Allen had actually been interviewed by police in 2017 and acknowledged being on the trail that day, but his tip had reportedly been misfiled. At trial, which took place in late 2024, Allen was convicted on all counts despite the defense's alternative theories. He was sentenced to life in prison without parole in January 2025.
