Six-year-old beauty pageant winner found dead in the basement of her family's home on the morning after Christmas. A ransom note demanding $118,000 was found, but JonBenét had never left the house. She had been struck on the head and strangled. Despite extensive investigation involving thousands of suspects, no arrests have ever been made.

On the morning of December 26, 1996, six-year-old JonBenét Ramsey was reported missing from her family's home in Boulder, Colorado. Her mother, Patsy Ramsey, told police she found a two-and-a-half-page handwritten ransom note on a staircase demanding $118,000 — an amount reported to closely match a bonus her father, John Ramsey, had received. No child was taken. Several hours later, around 1:00 p.m., John Ramsey and a friend discovered the girl's body in a basement room of the house. According to the coroner, the autopsy attributed her death to "asphyxia by strangulation associated with craniocerebral trauma." The killing drew intense national media attention that has continued for decades.

The early investigation was widely criticized. Reporting and later official reviews noted that the crime scene was not immediately secured, that friends and family moved through the house, and that potential evidence was contaminated before forensic work was complete. Suspicion in the press and among some investigators initially focused on members of the Ramsey family, though none of them was ever charged with a crime. A Boulder County grand jury was convened on September 15, 1998, to examine the case. In 1999 the grand jury voted to indict John and Patsy Ramsey on charges related to child abuse resulting in death and being accessories to a crime, but District Attorney Alex Hunter declined to sign the indictment or prosecute, citing insufficient evidence. The existence and content of that grand jury vote were not made public until sealed documents were released on October 25, 2013.

On July 9, 2008, Boulder District Attorney Mary Lacy publicly cleared the Ramsey family. Citing newly applied "touch DNA" analysis of an unidentified male profile recovered from JonBenét's clothing, Lacy wrote in a letter to John Ramsey that the evidence "excludes" the family as suspects and stated, "to the extent that we may have contributed in any way to the public perception that you might have been involved in this crime, I am deeply sorry." The family members were therefore never charged and were publicly exonerated by the DA. Critics, including some forensic experts, later questioned how conclusive the DNA finding was, and in 2016 successor District Attorney Stan Garnett said Lacy's exoneration letter was not legally binding.

The case remains officially unsolved and is handled as an active homicide by the Boulder Police Department. The department says it convened a Cold Case Review Panel in December 2023 and reports having followed up on more than 21,000 tips and interviewed over 1,000 people across 19 states. In a statement dated November 27, 2024, Police Chief Steve Redfearn said, "The assertion that there is viable evidence and leads we are not pursuing — to include DNA testing — is completely false," adding that detectives continue to work with DNA experts and outside labs. John Ramsey has publicly urged police to pursue investigative genetic genealogy on the unidentified male DNA, saying he believes newer techniques could identify the killer. As of 2026, Boulder police continue to describe the case as active and ongoing, with periodic annual updates, and no arrest has been made.
