Jill Meagher
Irish-Australian Jill Meagher was raped and murdered while walking home from a bar in Brunswick, Melbourne. Adrian Bayley, who was on parole for multiple rapes, was convicted.
On September 22, 2012, Jill Meagher, a 29-year-old Irish-born ABC radio journalist, disappeared while walking home from a bar on Sydney Road in Brunswick, Melbourne. CCTV footage showed a man talking to her.
Her body was found six days later in a shallow grave in a paddock northwest of Melbourne. She had been raped and strangled.
Adrian Bayley, 41, a serial rapist who was on parole at the time, was arrested after being identified from the CCTV footage. He had been convicted of 16 prior rapes.
Bayley was sentenced to life with a minimum of 35 years. The case sparked outrage about how Bayley was on parole and led to major reforms of Victoria's parole system, including the abolition of automatic parole for violent offenders.
