Case background and investigation
On October 2, 2018, Saudi journalist and Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi entered the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, Turkey to obtain papers for his upcoming marriage. He never came out.
Turkish intelligence determined that a 15-member team of Saudi agents, including a forensic doctor with a bone saw, had been dispatched to Istanbul. They killed Khashoggi within minutes of his entering the consulate and dismembered his body.
U.S. media reported in November 2018 that the CIA had concluded Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS) ordered the killing, and a declassified U.S. intelligence assessment released in February 2021 stated that he approved an operation to capture or kill Khashoggi; he denies ordering the killing and has not been charged. Saudi Arabia initially denied knowledge, then claimed it was a rogue operation, then admitted the killing.
Eight Saudi nationals were convicted in a Saudi court (five sentenced to death, later commuted to 20 years). The case was widely seen as a politically motivated assassination meant to silence a prominent critic of the Saudi regime.
