Aundria Michelle Bowman, born Alexis Miranda Badger, was a 14-year-old girl who had been adopted as an infant by Dennis and Brenda Bowman and raised at their home in Fillmore Township, near Hamilton, in Allegan County, Michigan. On March 11, 1989, she disappeared. Not long before she vanished, Aundria had disclosed to others, including a school counselor, that her adoptive father, Dennis, had sexually molested her. When she went missing, Dennis reported that she had run away from home. For more than three decades, authorities classified Aundria as a teenage runaway, and no serious homicide investigation followed her disappearance. That classification meant her case received little scrutiny, and the man who reported her missing was never treated as a suspect for many years.

Aundria's birth mother spent years searching for the daughter she had given up for adoption, unaware that the girl was long dead. The case remained dormant until it was cracked open from an entirely different direction. In November 2019, Dennis Bowman was arrested and charged in the 1980 rape and murder of Kathleen Doyle, a 25-year-old newlywed in Norfolk, Virginia, after DNA evidence and investigative genetic genealogy tied him to that cold case. His arrest prompted Michigan investigators to take a fresh look at the decades-old disappearance of his adopted daughter.

In early February 2020, while jailed in Virginia awaiting trial, Dennis Bowman confessed to Michigan detectives that he had killed Aundria back in 1989. According to authorities, he admitted striking her after she confronted him about the molestation, causing a fatal head injury, and then dismembering her body with an axe and machete before burying her. Bowman reportedly directed his wife to the location, and in February 2020 investigators recovered skeletal remains in Monterey Township, Allegan County, near a former Bowman property; the remains had been concealed beneath a thin layer of cement. DNA testing confirmed the remains were Aundria's, ending a 31-year mystery.

Dennis Bowman was convicted in Virginia of the murder of Kathleen Doyle and received two life sentences. In the Michigan case, on December 22, 2021, he pleaded no contest to second-degree murder in Aundria's death. On February 7, 2022, an Allegan County judge sentenced him to 35 to 50 years in prison, to run consecutively with his Virginia sentences, ensuring he will die behind bars. The case drew wide attention as an example of how a child reported as a runaway can mask a homicide for decades, and of how genetic genealogy in one cold case can unlock the truth in another. For Aundria's biological family, including the birth mother who had searched for years, the confession and recovery of her remains finally brought long-denied answers about her fate. The case was later featured in documentary coverage examining how Bowman's crimes had gone undetected for so long.
