Andrei Chikatilo Victims
Soviet serial killer Andrei Chikatilo, the 'Butcher of Rostov,' murdered 52 women and children over 12 years. He was caught, convicted of 52 murders, and executed in 1994.
Andrei Chikatilo murdered at least 52 women and children in the Rostov Oblast region of the Soviet Union between 1978 and 1990. Known as the 'Butcher of Rostov' and the 'Red Ripper,' he lured victims from bus and train stations.
Soviet investigators made critical errors early on—an innocent man was executed for Chikatilo's first murder. Chikatilo was once arrested but released because his blood type didn't match the evidence (a rare condition caused the discrepancy).
Chikatilo was finally caught on November 20, 1990, after an undercover operation at bus and train stations. He confessed to 56 murders, though police could confirm 52.
He was convicted of 52 murders in 1992 in a trial where he was kept in a cage in the courtroom to protect him from victims' families. He was executed by gunshot on February 14, 1994.
