Cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was shot and killed by a prop gun fired by Alec Baldwin on the set of 'Rust.' Armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed was convicted of involuntary manslaughter.

On October 21, 2021, during a rehearsal for the film 'Rust' at Bonanza Creek Ranch near Santa Fe, New Mexico, actor Alec Baldwin discharged a prop gun that was loaded with a live round. The bullet struck cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, 42, killing her, and injured director Joel Souza.

The investigation focused on how a live round ended up in a gun on a film set. Armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed was responsible for firearms safety on set. Multiple crew members had previously raised safety concerns.

Gutierrez-Reed was convicted of involuntary manslaughter in March 2024 and sentenced to 18 months in prison. She was found to have been negligent in her duties as armorer.

Charges against Baldwin were initially filed, then dropped, then refiled. His trial in July 2024 was dismissed with prejudice after the judge found prosecutors had withheld evidence from the defense.
