Jimmy Hoffa
Teamsters president Jimmy Hoffa vanished from the parking lot of a restaurant in Bloomfield Township, Michigan. He was believed to have been murdered by organized crime figures. His body has never been found.
On July 30, 1975, James Riddle 'Jimmy' Hoffa, the 62-year-old former president of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, disappeared from the parking lot of the Machus Red Fox restaurant in Bloomfield Township, Michigan. He had told his wife he was going to meet with two Mafia figures: Anthony 'Tony Pro' Provenzano and Anthony 'Tony Jack' Giacalone.
Hoffa had been one of the most powerful labor leaders in American history, leading the Teamsters from 1957 to 1971. He was convicted of jury tampering and fraud in 1964 and served four years in federal prison before President Nixon commuted his sentence in 1971 with the condition that he not engage in union activities until 1980. In 1975, Hoffa was actively seeking to regain control of the Teamsters.
His disappearance was almost certainly a mob hit ordered by organized crime figures who did not want Hoffa to return to power. The FBI investigated extensively, and several suspects were identified, including Charles 'Chuckie' O'Brien, who was believed to have driven Hoffa to his death. DNA evidence linked O'Brien's car to Hoffa, but O'Brien denied involvement until his death in 2020.
Numerous searches for Hoffa's body have been conducted over the decades at locations across Michigan and New Jersey, including a horse farm, a landfill, and beneath the Renaissance Center in Detroit. None have found remains. Hoffa was declared legally dead in 1982. His disappearance remains one of America's most enduring mysteries.
