On September 13, 2014, University of Virginia sophomore Hannah Graham, 18, disappeared after a night out in Charlottesville. Surveillance footage showed her walking with a man later identified as Jesse Matthew.

Hannah's remains were found five weeks later in rural Albemarle County. Jesse Matthew, a hospital worker, was arrested in Texas after fleeing Virginia.

DNA evidence linked Matthew not only to Graham's murder but also to the 2009 murder of Virginia Tech student Morgan Harrington and a 2005 sexual assault in Fairfax County.

Matthew pleaded guilty to both the Graham and Harrington murders and was sentenced to four consecutive life terms.
