Ivan Milat murdered seven backpackers in the Belanglo State Forest south of Sydney. Their bodies were found in 1992-1993. Milat was convicted in 1996 and died in prison in 2019.

Between 1989 and 1992, Ivan Milat abducted and murdered seven backpackers—both local and international—in the Belanglo State Forest, about 150 km southwest of Sydney.

The victims' remains were discovered by orienteers in September 1992 and subsequent searches through 1993. All had been stabbed or shot, some multiple times. Several had been subjected to a prolonged ordeal.

Milat was arrested in 1994 after Paul Onions, a British backpacker who had escaped an abduction attempt in 1990, identified him. Evidence linking Milat to the victims was found at his home.

Milat was convicted of seven murders and sentenced to seven consecutive life sentences in 1996. He maintained his innocence and died of cancer in prison on October 27, 2019.
