At least 10 sets of remains were found along Ocean Parkway near Gilgo Beach, Long Island. Architect Rex Heuermann was arrested in 2023 and charged with multiple murders.

Beginning in December 2010, police searching for missing woman Shannan Gilbert discovered human remains along a desolate stretch of Ocean Parkway near Gilgo Beach on Long Island's barrier island. Over the following months, at least 10 sets of remains were found in the area.

Most of the identified victims were young women who had advertised as escorts on Craigslist. The discovery revealed that a serial killer had been operating on Long Island, likely for years. The case was hampered by jurisdictional disputes between Suffolk County and other agencies.

A major breakthrough came in July 2023 when Rex Heuermann, a 59-year-old architect from Massapequa Park, Long Island, was arrested at his Manhattan office and charged with multiple murders. The arrest came after investigators linked him through genealogical DNA analysis, cell phone records, and other forensic evidence.

As of 2024, Heuermann has been charged with the murders of six victims and is suspected in others. He has pleaded not guilty. The investigation continues, with the possibility of additional charges.
