Gilberto Valle (Cannibal Cop)
NYPD officer Gilberto Valle was convicted of conspiracy to kidnap women he planned to torture, cook, and eat. His conviction was overturned on appeal—the court ruled his plans were fantasy, not intent.
Gilberto Valle, 28, an NYPD officer, was arrested in October 2012 after his wife discovered disturbing internet chats on his computer. Valle had been discussing kidnapping, cooking, and eating women with co-conspirators online.
Valle had used NYPD databases to research potential victims—real women he knew personally. His online conversations included detailed plans about how to abduct and prepare them.
A jury convicted Valle of conspiracy to kidnap in March 2013. However, in June 2014, a federal judge overturned the conviction, ruling that Valle's communications were 'fantasy role play' and that there was no evidence of an actual plan.
The case raised profound questions about the line between dark fantasy and criminal intent in the age of the internet. Valle later wrote a cookbook and appeared on reality television.
