Elsie Paroubek
Five-year-old Elsie Paroubek vanished from her Chicago neighborhood in 1911. Her body was found in a drainage canal weeks later. The case inspired one of outsider artist Henry Darger's works.
On April 8, 1911, five-year-old Elsie Paroubek, the daughter of Czech immigrants, vanished from the area near her family's home in Chicago's Pilsen neighborhood. She had been playing with her cousin when she disappeared.
A massive search was launched, and the case became front-page news across Chicago. Rewards were offered, and thousands of people participated in the search. The case highlighted the vulnerability of children in the rapidly growing industrial city.
On May 8, exactly one month after her disappearance, Elsie's body was found in a drainage canal on the outskirts of Chicago. The cause of death was drowning, but the circumstances remained unclear. No one was ever charged.
Elsie's case had an unexpected cultural legacy. Outsider artist Henry Darger, who lived in Chicago, was deeply affected by the newspaper coverage of her disappearance. He incorporated her image into his monumental work 'In the Realms of the Unreal.'
