Bardstown, Kentucky police officer Jason Ellis was ambushed and killed on a highway exit ramp while driving home from his shift. The calculated, execution-style killing has never been solved and is part of a series of violent unsolved crimes in Bardstown.

In the early morning hours of May 25, 2013, Officer Jason Ellis, a 33-year-old patrolman with the Bardstown Police Department, was driving home from his shift on the Bluegrass Parkway in Nelson County, Kentucky. As he exited the parkway at the Bardstown exit, he encountered debris—possibly tree branches—placed on the exit ramp. When Ellis stopped to move the debris, he was shot multiple times with a shotgun from a concealed position.

Ellis, who was wearing his body armor, was struck multiple times in areas not protected by the vest. He died at the scene. The deliberate placement of debris to force him to stop indicated premeditation and planning. The killer knew Ellis's route home and timed the ambush accordingly.

The investigation by Kentucky State Police and the FBI explored multiple theories, including whether Ellis had been targeted because of his police work—he was involved in narcotics investigations in an area known for drug activity—or whether there was a personal motive. The calculated nature of the ambush suggested professional planning.

Jason Ellis's murder is one of several violent unsolved crimes in the Bardstown area, a small city that became known as 'the most dangerous small town in America.' Other unsolved cases include the disappearance of Crystal Rogers and the murder of her father Tommy Ballard, and the murder of a local mother and daughter. The FBI has investigated possible connections between the cases. Officer Ellis's murder remains unsolved.
