Murdaugh Financial Crimes
Beyond the murders, Alex Murdaugh stole over $8.7 million from clients, including vulnerable accident victims and the family of his dead housekeeper. He received an additional 27-year sentence for financial crimes.
Alex Murdaugh's financial crimes extended far beyond the Gloria Satterfield insurance fraud. He stole from at least 18 victims over more than a decade, targeting vulnerable clients of his law firm.
Victims included the family of a deaf quadriplegic man, families who had lost loved ones in accidents, and former domestic workers. Murdaugh used a fictitious entity called 'Forge' to intercept settlement checks.
In total, Murdaugh admitted to stealing approximately $8.7 million. He had used the money to fund an opioid addiction and maintain his lifestyle.
In November 2023, Murdaugh pleaded guilty to 22 counts of state financial crimes and was sentenced to 27 years—running consecutive to his two life sentences for murder.
