Ted Bundy confessed to 30 homicides across seven states, though the actual number is believed higher. He was executed in Florida in 1989. His final crimes were committed at Florida State University, where he attacked sorority members. Bundy became one of the most notorious serial killers in American history.

Theodore Robert "Ted" Bundy was an American serial killer who kidnapped, raped, and murdered numerous young women and girls across several U.S. states between 1974 and 1978. His documented series of attacks began in the Pacific Northwest in early 1974, when young women started disappearing from around Seattle and college campuses in Washington and Oregon. The killings later extended into Utah, Colorado, Idaho, and ultimately Florida. Many victims shared a similar appearance, and Bundy often lured them by feigning injury or posing as an authority figure before overpowering them. Because he crossed state lines and disposed of remains in remote areas, investigators in different jurisdictions initially struggled to connect the cases.

Bundy first came to law-enforcement attention in Utah, where he was arrested on August 16, 1975, after a traffic stop turned up suspicious items in his car. He was linked to the attempted 1974 abduction of Carol DaRonch and, following a 1976 bench trial, was convicted of aggravated kidnapping and sentenced to prison. While facing a murder charge in Colorado, Bundy escaped custody twice: first on June 7, 1977, by jumping from a courthouse window in Aspen, and again on December 30, 1977, by crawling through a jail ceiling in Garfield County. After the second escape he fled to Florida.

In Tallahassee, Bundy carried out his most notorious attacks. In the early hours of January 15, 1978, he entered the Chi Omega sorority house near Florida State University, killing Margaret Bowman and Lisa Levy and severely injuring two other residents. Weeks later, on February 9, 1978, he abducted and murdered 12-year-old Kimberly Leach in Lake City, Florida; her remains were found in April 1978. Bundy was arrested in Pensacola on February 15, 1978, after another traffic stop.

Bundy was tried and convicted in Florida. In July 1979, a Miami jury found him guilty of the Chi Omega murders, and he received two death sentences. In a separate trial, he was convicted of Kimberly Leach's murder in February 1980 and sentenced to death a third time. After years of appeals, Bundy was executed in the electric chair at Florida State Prison in Raiford on January 24, 1989. He was convicted of these murders and executed for them—both established as fact by the courts and carried out by the state.

In the days before his execution, Bundy confessed to roughly 30 murders committed between 1974 and 1978 across Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Utah, Colorado, and Florida. However, the true number of his victims remains unknown and is only an estimate; investigators and Bundy himself suggested the total could be higher, and some crime scholars have cited figures of 36 or more. A number of suspected victims were never conclusively identified or recovered, leaving several possible cases unresolved. Today the case is closed with respect to Bundy's conviction and execution, but the full scope of his crimes—and the identities of all his victims—has never been definitively settled.
