Photographer Teresa Halbach was murdered in Manitowoc County, Wisconsin. Steven Avery and his nephew Brendan Dassey were convicted. The case was featured in Netflix's 'Making a Murderer.'

On October 31, 2005, twenty-five-year-old freelance photographer Teresa Halbach visited the Avery Auto Salvage yard in Manitowoc County, Wisconsin, to photograph a vehicle for Auto Trader magazine. She was never seen again.

Teresa's vehicle was found on the Avery property on November 5. Her remains were later found in a burn pit behind Steven Avery's trailer, and her car key was found in his bedroom. Avery, who had recently been exonerated after spending 18 years in prison for a wrongful sexual assault conviction, was charged with her murder.

Avery's 16-year-old nephew Brendan Dassey provided a confession implicating both himself and Avery, though Dassey later recanted, saying investigators had coerced his statements. Both were convicted: Avery of first-degree intentional homicide, and Dassey of first-degree intentional homicide, mutilation of a corpse, and second-degree sexual assault.

The 2015 Netflix documentary 'Making a Murderer' raised questions about the fairness of the investigation and trial, generating massive public debate about potential evidence planting and Dassey's coerced confession. Appeals have been ongoing but both men remain in prison.
