Michael Rockefeller, son of New York Governor Nelson Rockefeller, disappeared off the coast of southwestern New Guinea while on an art-collecting expedition. He likely drowned or was killed by Asmat tribesmen after swimming to shore from a capsized catamaran.

On November 19, 1961, Michael Clark Rockefeller, the 23-year-old son of New York Governor (and future Vice President) Nelson Rockefeller, disappeared off the coast of southwestern New Guinea (then Netherlands New Guinea) during an art-collecting expedition among the Asmat people. He had been traveling by catamaran with Dutch anthropologist René Wassing when their vessel capsized in rough seas at the mouth of the Eilanden River, approximately three miles offshore.

Wassing clung to the overturned hull and was eventually rescued by local villagers. Michael, an athletic young man who had been collecting Asmat tribal art for Harvard's Peabody Museum, decided to swim for shore. He strapped two empty gasoline cans to his body as flotation devices and set off toward the distant coast. He was never seen again.

The disappearance triggered a massive search involving the Dutch Navy, private aircraft, and local boats. Nelson Rockefeller flew to New Guinea to oversee the search personally. Despite weeks of intensive effort, no trace of Michael was found. The official conclusion was that he drowned, but persistent reports suggested a darker fate.

In his 2014 book 'Savage Harvest,' journalist Carl Hoffman presented evidence—including Dutch government documents and accounts from Asmat elders—that Michael reached shore alive but was killed and likely consumed in a ritualistic act by Asmat warriors from the village of Otsjanep. The Asmat had motive: in 1958, Dutch colonial authorities had killed several Otsjanep warriors, and the tribe's culture demanded retributive killing. The Dutch government reportedly investigated this possibility but suppressed the findings to protect diplomatic relations. No remains were ever recovered.
