On September 1, 1996, sisters Kati Lisk (15) and Kristin Lisk (12) disappeared from their home in Spotsylvania County, Virginia, after being dropped off by their school bus. Their bookbags were found on the front porch, suggesting they had entered the house before being taken.
Five days later, their bodies were found in a river in Stafford County. The case was linked to the 1996 kidnapping and murder of another girl, 16-year-old Sofia Silva, who had disappeared from her front yard in the same county just five months earlier.
The cases went unsolved for years until 2002, when DNA evidence connected both crimes to Richard Marc Evonitz, a former Spotsylvania resident who had moved to South Carolina. The breakthrough came when Evonitz abducted a 15-year-old girl in Columbia, South Carolina, who managed to escape and identify him.
When police attempted to arrest Evonitz on June 27, 2002, he fled in his car and died by suicide during a high-speed chase. DNA confirmed his involvement in the murders of the Lisk sisters and Sofia Silva.
